Over the last couple of weeks, thousands of people have received scam emails pretending to be from Ofgem telling them they are due a payment under a new government scheme to help deal with escalating gas and electricity costs.
The spoof phishing emails provide links for the recipient to follow in order to apply for the rebate.
The links in the emails lead to malicious websites designed to steal personal and financial information.
The scam emails display the email subject header ‘Claim your bill rebate now!’ and uses the Ofgem brand logo and colours to make the email appear authentic.
